The famine in Bessarabia (present-day Moldova and parts of Ukraine) between 1946 and 1947 was one of the worst postwar humanitarian disasters in the Soviet Union, resulting in the deaths of approximately 100,000 to 200,000 people. The tragedy did not have a single cause but was the result of a combination of climatic factors and political decisions: severe drought, forced requisitions, postwar destruction, and food exports.
