An "Open Mess" is a military term for a social club and dining facility. This was the primary hub for U.S. military officers and their families to socialize, dine on American cuisine, and host formal events or holiday celebrations. The "APO 205" printed on the ticket refers to the Army Post Office code for Tehran. This allowed personnel stationed in Iran to send and receive mail as if they were in the United States, using U.S. postage stamps.
