Mark

Palm tree Netherlands overseas, minted in the United States (1941-1945)

Comments

The palm tree mark signifies that these coins were minted for overseas territories of the kingdom, as opposed to the acorn mark for the country of the Netherlands.

These coins were struck for both Suriname and Curaçao:

1942 (P)
------ 500'000 Curaçao
------ 2'000'000 Suriname

While Krause lists these coins under Curaçao (KM#39a), more coins were struck for Suriname though, where it is listed as well. Discussion has taken place where to put these coins in the Numista catalog. In the Dutch catalog Muntalmanak (Schulman), the coin is placed under the Netherlands and in the Dutch catalog regarding the overseas territories (Scholten) the coins can be found under the West-Indies section (1365).
The concerning referees decided to put them under both the countries on Numista.

As well as Krause, Schulman and Passon mention a type in brass (KM# 39b), but it is not mentioned by Scholten for that year.
Passon also mention a rare type in stainless steel of 3.5 gram.
