During WWII, the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force (2 NZEF) established the No. 2 New Zealand Convalescent Depot to rehabilitate soldiers recovering from wounds and sickness before sending them back to active service. Used at the convalescent depot in Kalavere, New Caledonia during WWII. The depot was established September 1943 on the former site of the 109 U.S. Station Hospital.
