William Augustus Guy was President of the Royal Statistical Society from 1873-5 and the medal was commissioned by the Society to commemorate his death.
The first medal were awarded in 1892.
Des. and mod. by Henry Bates A.R.A. Gold awarded triennially for outstanding contribution to statistics, silver and bronze annually for papers presented to the Society. (Pinches)
The Guy Medal in Gold is awarded triennially to those “who are judged to have merited a signal mark of distinction by reason of their innovative contributions to the theory or application of statistics”. It can be awarded both to fellows (members) of the Society and to non-fellows: The recipient of this medal was the twelfth of 33 recipients to date. (2011)
