Translation: House of the Settler.
When Anglo-American forces liberated Oran from Vichy French control during Operation Torch in November 1942, the building's central location and vast facilities made it an ideal target for military requisitioning. The Allies converted parts of the Maison du Colon into a prominent recreation centre, mess hall, and canteen for thousands of transit troops.
