Comments

Test strike on copper of the counter-mark used on numerous European silver coins by Maximilian Gandolf von Kuenburg in an attempt to sort out among the coinage circulating at the end of the 17th century. During the "Kipper periode" related to the 30 year war, number of coins of low silver content had been produced and many states were making difficulties in accepting the further "Münzordnungs".
The idea in Salzburg was that only the countermarked coinage would be exchanged for the full value of 60 Kreuzer, others only for 50 to 25 depending on their silver content. There was however a taxe associated, and it obliged the owners to show their richness. It was little successful and soon abandoned. Countermarked coins are rare (from Austria, Salzburg and many German States). Source Zöttl (2009 is) vol.II pp 736-763.
