Abstract

Foreword

This work began with the intention of writing an article for a numismatics journal about the coins and monetary history of the charming little state between Switzerland and Austria, which I had come to appreciate during several visits. To understand the coinage of the princes and later of the principality, it then became necessary to address the general historical background of the princely family and the principality, as well as the current political and economic conditions. This resulted in a scope that warranted publication in its present form. I would like to thank Mr. Albert Meier, the editor of the Helvetic Numismatic Journal, for accepting this work as part of his journal's special publications, and the Bank in Liechtenstein AG in Vaduz for its generous support in making this work possible.

The bibliographic references indicate the sources I consulted. This work aims to provide those interested in numismatics and monetary history with a deeper understanding of the few coins issued by Liechtenstein, while also offering insights into the development and current significance of the Principality. This focus on numismatics made it unnecessary to cite every single piece of information in the cited literature. Those wishing to delve deeper into the history and present of Liechtenstein will find further information in the bibliography.

I would like to express my gratitude for their helpful information, valuable suggestions, and the provision of literature to Mr. B. Konrad, Director of Tourism (Liechtenstein Tourist Office, Vaduz); Dr. A. Ospelt, State Librarian (Liechtenstein State Library, Vaduz); and Mr. R. Allgäuer, Cabinet Director (Office of His Serene Highness the Reigning Prince of Liechtenstein, Vaduz). I would also like to thank Dr. K. A. Majer, Attorney at Law in Vienna, and the firm of Motek Horowicz Coins and Medals in Munich. Finally, thanks are due to Director Dr. R. Baumstark (Princely Collections, Vaduz) for his willingness to receive Albert Meier for photographic work, and to Felix Marxer (Liechtenstein National Museum, Vaduz), as well as once again to Dr. A. Ospelt, for their critical review of the manuscript.
