The Byzantine habit of naming emperors and their family members Constantine has been a perennial source of confusion for numismatists and historians alike. Although scholars have long accepted the idea that there were eleven figures who bore this name, closer examination shows that there were in fact twenty-two Constantines, including children and relatives who did not exercise power independently. Eliminating them reduces the list to fourteen figures who actually reigned, but it seems unlikely that current practice can be changed without increasing the risk of confusion.
