Abstract

It has long been held that during the second half of the fourth century Paionia was subject to Macedonian rule or even incorporated directly within the Macedonian state. This paper discusses Paionia's vassalage in light of the coinage issued by Patraos (c.335-315), accepts that the coinage provides the only firm evidence of events in Paionia during this period, and suggests a revised reading of the relationship between Paionia and its southern neighbour.
