| Mints | Massalia, Gaul |
The Phocaean colony of Massalia introduced its own coinage around 525 BC. The "heavy" drachma , a silver coin weighing around 3.7 g, with representations of a head of Artemis and a lion walking on the right, was probably minted during the 3rd century. In this study, we will analyze the main features of this denomination, such as chronology, discoveries and workshop organization. A study of the wedge links, based on a corpus of 90 examples that it has been possible to identify, enables us to estimate the original quantity of wedges and to formulate hypotheses as to the production of the Massalia workshop. By comparison with other cases, the possible reasons for the introduction of this denomination are discussed.
