In the course of the CNR program "For the Recovery of Evidence of Byzantine Artistic Culture in Italy," of which the volumes in this series are one of the expressions, and during the investigations that were being carried out in Tuscany, and specifically in Siena, it therefore did not seem out of place to focus attention also on the numismatic collections of the Museo Civico di Siena, and in particular on the Byzantine coins found there. All the more so since a history of these collections was not available and there was a lack of any printed catalog, either of the collections as a whole or of the Byzantine section, which, on the other hand, though small, appeared worthy of dissemination, not least because of the presence of specimens that were not exactly trivial in terms of rarity or other reasons.
