The Iberian settlement of Iltirta was located in the territory of the Ilergetes people, close to the Pyrenees and circa 75km north of Colonia Tarraco (modern-day Taragona). A battle between Julius Caesar and his adversary Pompey took place here in 49 BC and the city later became the Roman Municipium of Ilerda. The first coinage series of Iltirta consisted of Emporitan imitation drachms with the inscription ILTIRTAR, ILTIRTASALIR, or ILTIRTASALIRUSTIN and Massalian imitation divisional coinage, with the inscription ILTIRTAR. The mint of Iltirta continued striking monetary issues under Roman domination using the Iberian inscription ILTIRTA, whose first issue was a bronze coin showing a wolf and using the same metrology as used in Kese. This early coinage is followed by two parallel issues: one showing a horseman with the Roman metrological system and the other one showing the wolf, which follows the Tarraco–Kese system. The silver that would finance the Roman penetration to the inner territories is partly struck at Iltirta following the Roman denarius standard. Later on, during the 2nd century BC, only horseman-type coinage was struck. During the Sertorian wars (80–70 BC), monetary issues revert to the Kesean influence by adopting the wolf-type pieces and Kesean metrology. This last series is crude and low-weighed and may be considered an imitation. (source: Leandre Villaronga, Jaume Benages; 2011. "Ancient Coinage of the Iberian Peninsula".
