Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648–1695) was the illegitimate child of a wealthy family in Nueva España who was a gifted polymaath as a child and brought herself renown at 17 when she proved her self-taught education in front of the leading colonial scholars and thinkers. She entered the convent at 19 in order to learn without distraction. She distinguished herself as a proto-feminist writer during the Spanish Golden Age.
