Obverse

The nine coats of arms of the Austrian provinces surround the "5" of the face value "5 EURO". Around the coats of arms is the inscription "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (Republic of Austria). The design is directly inspired by the old Austrian 50 schilling coins.

The Hofburg Palace in Vienna on the square called "Josefsplatz" where the equestrian statue of Joseph II stands in the center. The wing of the Imperial Palace on the right contains the Spanish Riding School and the "Great Redoubt Hall", which was the venue for many meetings and conferences during the Austrian Presidency.
