Comments

996, date of the first appearance of the word Ostarrichi on a Bavarian document by Otto III Holy Roman Emperor referring to a small area of the extreme eastern Bavaria, is considered the symbolic date of birth of Austria. This territory belonged to the Babenberg dynasty, Leopold I and his son Henry I, Margrave in 996.
