Fiduciary Coins of Malta

In 1567, when Jean De Valette was Grand Master of the order, he was building the new city of Valletta (Malta’s Capital) and it was clear that the treasury of the state wasn’t going to be able to afford building this city. Thus, he employed the use of Fiduciary coins. These were pieces made out of copper instead of the usual silver and were used to pay workers, with the promise that once the precious metal was back in high enough numbers, the fiduciaries could be exchanged. There was 2 denominations issued by 4 different Grandmasters and these are as follows :-
