Comments

The Medal of Bravery rewards people who, at the risk of injury or even death, have saved other lives. From simple passers-by who save a stranger from drowning or bursting into flames, to those who protect their fellow citizens from animal attacks... These are just some of the "acts of bravery performed in dangerous circumstances" recognized by the Medal of Bravery over the past 50 years. Recipients of this award may not consider themselves heroes, but their selflessness is one of the country's great strengths, and merits one of its highest honors.

About the Medal of Bravery
In 1972, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II introduced a set of medals to recognize acts of bravery: the Cross of Valour, the Star of Courage and the Medal of Bravery. These Canadian decorations for bravery are awarded according to the seriousness of the risk incurred by the recipients. The Medal of Bravery is one of the best-known civilian honours for outstanding acts of courage. Since its inception, the Medal of Bravery has been awarded to nearly 3,300 individuals by the Governor General of Canada: Canadian and non-Canadian citizens, civilians and combatants, living and deceased. It recognizes "acts of bravery performed under dangerous circumstances", whether an animal attack or a burning building. The act may have been performed outside Canada, but must have been in the interest of the country or have involved at least one Canadian person. Nominations for the Medal of Bravery may be submitted by any person or organization to the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall no later than two years after the event.

Did you know?
The first Medals of Bravery were awarded in July 1972, just two months after the award was created. This silver decoration is worn suspended from a red ribbon with three blue stripes for men, while for women, the same ribbon takes the form of a buckle.
To receive a Medal of Bravery, you don't have to be a Canadian citizen. In fact, the act itself may have been performed outside Canada, provided Canadian interests were at stake or at least one Canadian person was involved.
Honorary initials are groups of letters placed after a person's name to specify certain distinctions, appointments, qualifications or awards they have received, and are generally used in correspondence or official documents. Recipients of the Medal of Bravery may add the letters "M.B." after their name (e.g.: Pierre Untel, M.B.).
This is not the first Canadian coin to feature the Medal of Bravery design: it also appears on a 2006 commemorative 25-cent circulation coin, as well as on a Special Edition Silver Proof Dollar and a Limited Edition Silver Proof Dollar with colored enamel. The design also appears on a 99.99% pure silver 1 oz commemorative coin marking the medal's anniversary in 2022.
