This medal is a part of the E.W. Coles series but was not issued by E.W. Cole or his relations. It was produced in 1984 as a commemorative item for the release of a Cole's handbook of medals and other items. The author George Dean finally released the Handbook in 1988 and the pre-issue subscribers to the Handbook were entitled to purchase the set of tokens in this set. Six tokens numbered D99 to D104. Gilt, Silver plated, Nickel plated, Copper (3 mm thickness), Copper (2 mm thickness); and Aluminium.
They were originally sold only in a set but these sets are starting to be broken up and can be found individually.
The original E.W. Cole tokens and medals which this one commemorates, were a series of medals offering maxims and proverbs issued by E.W. Cole at his Book Arcade.
The reverse of the issued medal is a design that was only used for one of the tokens issued by Cole and the medal itself is very rare. George states that he produced the medal so that collectors may have this rare reverse represented in their collections.
