Henry Grunthal

Henry Grunthal (1905–2001) was a German-American numismatist and curator, recognized for his expertise in European and modern coins. Born in Cologne, Germany, he studied archaeology and art history at institutions including Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin, the University of Jena, and the Sorbonne in Paris. His numismatic training was under prominent figures such as Kurt Regling and Geheimrat Pick.

In 1938, Grunthal emigrated to the United States and joined the American Numismatic Society (ANS) in 1953. He served as an assistant to the chief curator and later became the curator of European and modern coins, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. During his tenure, he contributed significantly to the ANS collections and publications.

After retiring, Grunthal continued his numismatic career as a consultant and collaborated on auctions with Edward Gans at Numismatic Fine Arts. His contributions to the field were recognized with the American Numismatic Association Medal of Merit in 1970 and an ANS medal commemorating fifty years of membership in 1979.
