Henry Nelson Wright

Henry Nelson Wright (1870–1941) was a distinguished British numismatist and Indian Civil Servant, renowned for his extensive work on Islamic coinage. Born in 1870, he developed an early interest in numismatics, particularly focusing on the coins of the Mughal Empire and the Sultans of Delhi.

In 1907, Wright published "The Sultans of Delhi," a seminal work that laid the foundation for his future research. He was a founding member of the Numismatic Society of India, with its inaugural meeting held at his residence in Allahabad. His dedication to numismatics was further recognized when he received the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society in 1932, one of the highest honors in the field.

Wright's contributions to numismatics include:

  • Catalogue of Coins in the Indian Museum, Calcutta: Published in 1907, this work remains a significant reference for Indian coinage.
  • The Coinage and Metrology of the Sultans of Dehli: Published in 1936, this comprehensive study is considered a cornerstone in the field.
  • Coins of the Mughal Emperors of India: A detailed catalog of Mughal coinage, reflecting his deep engagement with Islamic numismatics.

In 1939, Wright donated his personal collection of Islamic and Gupta coins to the British Museum, significantly enhancing its holdings. He was a Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society and a founding member of the Indian Numismatic Society, both of which honored him with gold medals for his contributions. The Numismatic Society of India continues to commemorate his legacy by awarding the Nelson Wright Medal for academic excellence in numismatics.

Wright passed away on May 13, 1941, in England, leaving behind a lasting impact on the study of Islamic coinage.
