Toussaint Louverture was a former slave born in 1743 on a plantation on the island of Saint-Domingue (Haiti). He led the slave revolt against the white colonists in 1791, supported by the Spanish. He set the richest of the French colonies on fire. Three years later, the French Republic abolished slavery, and Toussaint rallied to its cause, becoming the first black general in the French army. His military success and political acumen enabled him to become the undisputed governor of the colony of Saint-Domingue, from which he had previously expelled the Spanish.
