Coins from Gotland
Gotland is an island in the Baltic Sea, which has been occupied since prehistory. Starting in 1285, Gotland was an autonomous area of Sweden; however, in 1361, it fell under Danish control, only to fall to the Teutonic Order in 1398, the Kalmar Union in 1408, back to the Danish in 1523, back to the Swedish in 1645, the Danish again in 1676, and finally back to Swedish in 1679, save for a brief, 23-day occupation by the Russians in 1808. Throughout the island's history, Gotland had been quite popular with Vikings, and has been the source of many coin hoards, including the Spillings Hoard—the largest Viking hoard ever found.
