thank you arusak, you have definitely put me on the right track. I believe my coin may be a bit older, but not by much. What a surprise to find the coin only dates to the late 1800s. I would have bet my left one that the coin was at least 1000 years old.

Many older Indian coins were still struck this way even into the 20th century sometimes, the coin making is much more primitive than that of Europe at the time.
