Comments

Urraca was an indian chief from the Province of Veraguas, who fought the Spaniards in Panamá between 1520 and 1531. The arc of 9 stars represent the 9 provinces of Panamá at that time (today 10).

Since its separation from Colombia in 1903, Panama has used the United States Dollar. These coins have the same specifications as the United States 1 Cent and circulated alongside it.

1961 dated coins were made with 95% Copper, 5% Zinc and Tin. 1962 dated coins were made with 97% Copper, 2.5% Zinc, and 0.5% Tin. 1966-1983 dated coins were made with 95% Copper and 5% Zinc. The alloy used in 1983-1987 dated coins is currently unknown.

Due to inflation and rising metal prices, the composition of United States Pennies changed from 95% Copper, 5% Zinc into 2.5% Copper, 97.5% Zinc in 1982. Panamanian coins followed suit in 1983.

For the 1968 circulation issue, 24,740,000 were minted in Denver and 260,000 were minted in San Francisco.
For the 1975 circulation issue, 10,000,000 were minted in Philadelphia and 10,000,000 were minted in West Point.
