My coin has two stars, one on each side. Is this a variant? Or is a missing star an error?

you could call the two ends the "left end" and the "right end", the left end being where both waves start upwards like a sin wave.
This page shows a star at the left end, they say there is "a star", but maybe they forgot to mention the other one:
