Although Andorra is nominally a monarchy, it has two non-resident heads of state titled Co-Princes.

Here is a list of the Co-Princes of Andorra;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co-princes_of_Andorra .

The Bishops of Urgell have the title of Episcopal Co-Prince of Andorra.

The various heads of state in France have had the title of French Co-Prince of Andorra.

Both Co-Princes should be listed as ruling authorities for Andorra.

Yes, what you say is true. Instead of Bishop, he could write Co-prince in the ruling authority box. Andorra is a Principality (not a Monarchy) and has as Heads of State those you mention (Bishop of Urgell and President of the French Republic)

Only rulers who have emitted coins must be in Numista database. The oldest Andorran coin in Numista is from 1978, then only the last two bishops need to be in Numista, and indeed they are.

What we can add are the last presidents of France as princes:
  • Valéry Giscard d'Estaing 1974–1981
  • François Mitterrand 1981–1995
  • Jacques Chirac 1995–2007
  • Nicolas Sarkozy 2007–2012
  • François Hollande 2012–2017
  • Emmanuel Macron 2017-

Although it does not sound très républicain :O

Hello, I think that the database is shared between coins, banknotes and exonumia, so, as zegeri comments, the coin catalog starts in 1978, but in the other two catalogs:
  • Banknotes: there are banknotes from 1936.
  • Exonumia: There are "medallic coinage" from 1960 to 1965.

Taking both into account, one should also add:

For 1936 the President of France to be added is Albert Lebrun (1934-1940) and the Bishop of Urgell is Justí Guitart y Vilardebó (1934-1940) (it already exists in the database)

For the period from 1960 to 1965, the President of France to be added is Charles de Gaulle (1959-1969) and the Bishop of Urgell is Ramón Iglesias i Navarri (1943-1969).

In my opinion, "Ruling authority " must be Co-Prince title.

What title French presidents use? I am asking because we do not list presidents, only republics…

They are the French Co-Princes of Andorra.

Aidan.

My suggestion to add the presidents of France as princes was a joke, although some of them would have liked it.

The official title is Co-Princes of Andorra

Hi Jarcek, as BCNumismatics and zegeri comment, the official title is Co-Princes of Andorra.

I think we would have two options:

  • List both under the same title Co-Princes

  • List the Bishop of Urgell under the title Episcopal Co-Prince and the President of France under the title French Co-Prince.

It is important to comment that we are not listing Presidents, since in this case they act as Co-Princes. If we indicate in ruling French Republic authority, that would indicate that Andorra belongs to France, which is not correct.

What is current is not correct either, since it indicates Bishop, and Andorra is not a Bishopric, simply the Bishop of Urgel (Catalonia, Spain) acts as Co-Prince, as does the President of France.

Oscar,

Episcopal Co-Prince & French Co-Prince are most definitely correct.

Andorra is officially a diarchy - even though it is officially titled ‘Principality of Andorra’ - which indicates that Andorra is a type of princely monarchy.

We held a debate on this, and concluded that French presidents should not be added, as per point 2.3. of guidelines.

Bishops have been made co-princes.

Bishops have been made co-princes.

The Kings of France were also Co-Princes of Andorra, as was the 2 Emperor Napoleons.

It seems strange not to include the post-1870 French Co-Princes of Andorra as a continuation of this line.
