Kingdom of Valencia (Spanish States), 1 Denier Coins [solved]

4 posts • viewed 93 times

I bought these coins in a lot with some Spanish castle/lion coins from the 15-1600s, and the seller thought they might be Persian, but I cannot find them on the net. If anyone can help identify them, it would be much appreciated.

Coin 1 - approx 12mm diameter, approx 1 gram, maybe bronze, but if so, with a high copper content as I see some greening. One side has a head with maybe a crown or wreath on their head and what looks like the letter M towards the bottom-right, the other side has what looks to me like stylised wheat, but could be something else.

Coin 2 - approx 14mm diameter, approx 1 gram, maybe bronze, cut badly off-centre. The head side has a smaller head and the letters V S II under it, assuming you read it upside-down. The same stylised wheat is on the other side, but with thicker leaves (if they are leaves).

I don't think that is persian

Great, thanks Coinwalla. I kind of figured as none of my Persian searches came up with anything like it, but I appreciate the confirmation!

I went looking through the coin listings here and stumbled on this:

N#109140

For sure these are from the Spanish Kingdom of Valencia. I think coin 1 is probably a 1 Denier coin from around Felipe IV's time, and coin 2 looks like an earlier Felipe III 1 Denier, so I'm going to call that solved.
