Most unpopular country? (NCLT Edition)

5 posts • viewed 117 times

There is already a poll about unpopular countries regarding circulating coins; why not have a poll about least favorite countries regarding non-circulating (NCLT) coins!

What is your least favorite country when it comes to non-circulating coins?

Of course, no circulating coins (or special variants of circulating coins, such as proof coins), but also no fantasy issues please.

I hear every coin you jingle!

Oh has to be one of those countries with the British Royal family on for the past 30 years, Australia, Canada or the UK - way too many each year, ridiculous themes, stupid denominations over priced pointless collectors crap which devalues all the good work of the actual circulating commemorative coins they produce - which I like. Just imagine the extra market interest in the CCC if the NCLT weren’t pumped out as a money making exercise.

Here is an entire thread about niue and its ”coins”

:)

With the obvious exception of the small island nations that do it purely as a source of income (Niue, British Antarctic Territory, Tuvalu etc) I am increasingly becoming sick of the rubbish that the UK Royal Mint churns out, increasingly in poor designs too. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they start using AI generated imagery to strike on to coins in the near future.

For me personally, I don't really see the appeal in mass produced base metal NCLT coinage, part of the joy of numismatics (for me at least) is the connection with history and people who have used the money before.

Well aware that there is some hypocrisy in my statement as I do collect UNC and modern coinage but that's just my take on it all.

Agree with all the above. I dislike 95% of all NCLT in general, unless its generic bullion that is sold near or on Face Value (Britannias, gold ounces etc). Anything with superheroes, sports players, American pop culture like Elvis, Disney, Marilyn Monroe and “Wallpaper” stamp topics like Pirates of the Caribbean on coins from Congo etc.

Countries - all these ones issue true rubbish in my opinion (Although their circulating coins are usually great especially Fiji).

Niue - well they just go bananas with Power Coin, NZ Mint. Superheroes, American pop culture, nonsense like Pokeyman characters, chicken wings, burgers, the Simpsons, Michael Jackson, kick boxers and that violent fight craze (I have no idea what its called and I really don't care - so don't tell me). PS NZ Mint is a private company that has nothing to do with our government or money supply.

Fiji - has issued some dodgy rubbish with super heroes, coke bottle lids(!!!!)

UK - Yes like Canterbury 17 - the amount of cheaply designed rubbish like the coins of Iron Maiden, who, Bowie, Elton (I love these acts - but the coins are tacky cash ins), plus sheer numbers of coins and permutations such as 7kg gold coins of the James Bond series.

African country silver rounds - Cameroon showed a very stupid and poorly designed coin showing a Maori warrior, Congo Gorille coins etc and Somalian silver rounds. These places should focus on increasing their living standards, rather than issuing crappo coins.

British Islands and Overseas Territories - Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Mann, Tristan Da  Cunha etc - some of its decent and okay and none is offensive like the Superhero rubbish or Maori warriors from Africa, but royal family topics, jingoistic themes - very much aimed at Nanny Fogerty who reads the People's Friend. Royal Family on a coin, is like Royal Family on stamps - poison that becomes mega worthless.

NCLT from the West Indies, Guyana, Ghana, Malawi and any other country that issues coins with pop culture themes or topics, like animals, cars, fish etc and they have NOTHING to do with the country and are often issued by a private mint, which is using the country as a flag of convenience and the people in that country have no idea these coins exist.

Any NCLT issued in a precious metal, that is sold more than 2x its melt value (Before the wild price rises in metals over 2025 and 2026).

Australia gets a pass, the stuff from Perth Mint, is borderline - but some of it is very pretty and well made and its totally relevant to Australian people, culture, history, society and nature, something these other countries could learn from. They also issue many commems at face value in change and this is welcome if somewhat obsessive at times and leaning a lot on sports and childrens TV!

Canada also gets a pass as they issue a lot of big blingy coins with jewels in them and big weird shapes - but they again focus on their culture and nature and have some beautiful designs. They also issue nice coloured commems that are well priced or in change.

Finally - anything with Donald Trump on it, tasteless and poorly made rubbish, although I know all this stuff is basically fantasy coins.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
