Help wanted with date and mint of dirham [solved]

6 posts • viewed 76 times

Hello,

I acquired this beautiful dirham:

N#227749

It's a beautiful specimen, but I want to know if the date and mint can be determined before adding it to the collection.

The Numista page have only five year lines, but there are more than five mints listed on the coin page, and even more in Zeno.

While looking at Zeno, I couldn't find an exact match. Some have similar style, but none was identical.

So I ask for help with identifying the exact variant to those who can read arabic.

Hello, Im not super experienced with Ilkhanate coinage so take my opinion with a grain a salt. The mint looks like Mawsil to me. No clue on the date.

I am no expert either and my understanding is that the exact date is written in the margins on the reverse along with the mint in center. Because your coin is unfortunately struck off center, one margin is non existant while the other is worn to the point of illegible. I fear this example cannot be dated exactly. I read the mint differently as Isfahan (Iran/Persia). Take that with a grain of salt as well. Not convinced the link you sent is a match and the blurry photos on that page are less than helpful as well. Good luck wiith it.

Any more ideas?

It is hard to say, since the writing is very crude (or missing) in some key parts, but probably this coin:

https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=306666&cat=12201&ppuser=&sortby=d&way=desc

It can be read roughly something like ضرب ب (meaning “struck in”), inside the blue line; and موصل (meaning Al-Mawsil, present-day Mosul, Iraq), inside the yellow line; and تسع (meaning “nine”), inside the pink line.

So my guess is struck in Mosul in AH 699

Thank you vey much, you solved the case.

Actually, the other two dirhams on the Mawsil subcategory on Zeno are even closer to mine than the one you linked.

Thanks to you I can close the case, but I still can't add it to my collection. There's no al-Mawsil year line at the Numista page, I'll need to edit and add it.
