Hello everyone,
I came across this amazing coin, sold as junk. Or, well, half a coin. This particular half is the top half of the ½ Schilling (Halber Bayrischer Schilling), minted in the Duchy of Pfalz-Neuburg in 1622 (technically ¼ Schilling ;-). Date not visible, but it is a one-year type. VALER-variety) Despite having a hole, it is still in a good condition. You might not be able to tell from the photos, but the coin is really shiny!
Now, Krause does not assign any value the coin. I know that it is rare, I have only been able to find two auction records from Künker, with this coin (its entirely) scoring very highly. So, now I have two questions:
1) Valuation: Do you know if this coin has any proper value left? I will not sell it, of course. It is still a (tiny) gem in my collection of German States, as this coin is still, very rare. And talking about rarity:
2) Rarity: Are there any estimates regarding the survival rate? Künker describes it as “Of Highest Rarity”, which does not provide me with any concrete numbers. If any of you have access to more specialised catalogues, e.g. Noss, would you be able to tell me anything about its rarity.
Of course, here are the photos:
