You get off work and start your car. Then clean off the snow and ice, get in. And your finger sticks to the metal part of the seat belt.

You know that it's cold when...
...you buy take-away coffee not to drink it, but to warm up your hands around it.
... you wrap your scarf around your neck and mouth, breathe through it to keep warmer and scarf freezes, due to air you breathe out.
... the same scarf then freezes onto your chin (piece of advice, dont try to remove it by ripping it away..ouch)
... the soft drink in ur backpack starts to have icecubes in it.
... you laugh out loud when you hear the sound of ice-cream van.
... you have ice flowers on your windows....INSIDE.
... the first thing you say to anyone, is not "hi, how are you", but different variations of "its bloody cold".
... you try to take exact change from ur purse and ur fingers seem unable to get hold of ANY coin.
... you can't get key into ur postbox and when you finally do, it gets stuck and freezes.

You know its cold when you go camping and everyone you know thinks you have a mental disorder.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Back when I was a mad teen I once camped at -43. It was a great experience, but that's exactly what happened. People start talking with you very cautiously in future, in case if you have one of your "meltdowns, like the time you went camping" hahahhaa

You know it's cold when....you go hiking and your camping spot for the night has a frozen waterfall behind it, your sleeping bag freezes to the side of the tent overnight, and you have to light a fire in the morning to thaw your boots and trousers before you can put them on.
Happened when I was hiking up in Lewis Pass a few years back.

I guess this discussion is currently lost on our Aussie and Kiwi members... but up here in Canada it is surprisingly balmy for this time of year (an endless string of 0C days... everything is drippy, slushy and horrible).

I'm in New Zealand and my story was in New Zealand. I've done a fair amount of winter alpine hiking (we call it tramping) in the southern alps and it gets bloody cold in there. I went tramping with a friend up by the Mavora Lakes last year and it was down around -17 celcius, the hunters drive their quad bikes up the lake to reach the top huts. Lots of fun. Of course it never gets as low as it does in other countries.
