1782 1/24 Thaler Prussia - fake, pattern or what?

3 posts
I have these two "identical" coins from 1782 Prussia. One of them is clearly silver, but the other is bronze/copper. Krause doesn't allow for that - not listed as off metal strike or pattern. The bronze/copper one weighs 2.4 grammes, the silver one 2.14 - Krause has it at 2.07.

Guess the bronze one must be a fake? or? Unlisted pattern?

Anyone shed a light?

Ernie
Can you post pictures of the obverse as well?

I don't have this coin, but I have a few experience with low silver content coins, example Swiss Cantons coins and Ottoman coins, and can tell you that depending on usage of the coins, the "silver" .222 can look as copper without problem. So I wouldn't worry at all, they look both genuine to me, its just that the "copper" one was used more than the "silver" one.

Hi, lidianb. Thank you for answering. It seems a plausible explanation to this coin, although i am amazed that the low silver coins can be that indistinguishable from copper variants.
