German Democratic Republic coins - obverse and reverse - what is the rule?

3 posts
Hi, there! Recently I've made a request to swap obverse and reverse of some DDR coin types and the request was rejected and a note added: "The Communist symbol should always go on the obverse; if you'd like, change the obverse and reverse of the commemorative coins of the DDR. Thanks!" So, i would like to find out why I was allegedly wrong )) I just did my request based on the Krause catalog as to the obverse and reverse of these coin types. So where did we get the rule "The Communist symbol should always go on the obverse"??? )) As far as I know, in the numismatics an obverse of the coin is usually the side where the name of the issuing authority is indicated! So what shall we do, then? Cheers, Alex

well - some of the countries are still in obverse / reverse following different rules.
while it usually was (here on Numista): obverse goes with design, reverse with denomination.
it became: obverse goes with coat of arms / state emblem, reverse goes with the "Other" side,
be it denomination, design or state name.
Since there is no "similar for all" ruling - some countries mix denomination with coat of arms, while
state's name is on the other side, there most probably won't be a rule for all anytime soon here.
but be asured - we already talked about that one - it's just that other matters are more pressing right
now- thanks
