An enigmatic BRUTUS token

1 post
The Brutus tokens are British but they are considered "Canadian borderline" because they circulated here in some quantity. This morning I received this one:

There are scratches (turquoise arrows), a die crack and a small die chip (yellow arrows), but to my surprise some of the scratches, upon closer inspection, turned out to be raised lines (white arrows)! I looked at different light angles and there's no doubt that they are raised. This means that they were scratched on the surface of the die ─probably the anvil die─ before this token was struck. That's quite interesting on its own, and I remind you of a token that I have yet to receive which also shows raised lines, though not scratches.

Now, the interesting part... Have a look at these examples which I found online today:

I tried to organize them roughly in the order of best to worst condition of the die. This can be determined by the extension of the die crack and die chip, though some of the photos aren't good enough to be sure that the ordering is all that accurate. Mine is #7. You'd expect that the raised lines would still be there as the die kept on being used, but no other token shows those raised lines.

It would be surprising if those scratches were accidental ─ how would that happen?? Were they guidelines for a die sinker to rework the die?? And why would that be necessary?? Has anyone any idea?

Oh, and if you have the same variety of the Brutus token (there are several portraits) I invite you to compare it with mine and the others. If you could post photos, that would be great.
