It was a spinner - notice the little broken off tabs on the left and right -
so when in the holder only by spinning it round quickly could the lettering
be seen - which is why each side only has partial letters.

I quickly cleaned the images up a little. Yours has the broken off tabs on the left
and right, so is held at the side, unlike top and bottom in the previous picture.

Wow, very clever. Never would have thought of that. I am now just seeing the little broken bits on the side. Any idea of how I can try to find out more about the origin? It seems like maybe it's just something someone had made?
