Here is one for the collectors in the Republic of Ireland.

Do you include the Irish coins dated 1949 onwards in your British Commonwealth collection?

If so, then why?

If not, then why not?

im not Irish but do put Ireland in my commonwealth wish list of coins to get because there’s in my mind such a connection and interesting history between the currency’s

there like one of those country’s like Trinidad and Tobago. after 1976 they are not in the commonwealth but since they where at one time I find it cool to still collect them.

this is the same for Ireland there like one of those country’s for me. There designs are similar, when they decimalized are the same and some of there coin dimensions stay the same as most commanwealth nations

Trinidad & Tobago IS in the Commonwealth - but it is also a republic.

and now that I remember Ireland it totally out of both so it depends on a persons opinion

what about Hong Kong ? Like it was apart of the comman wealth, would it be worthy to collect now ?
I do for 2 reasons

1. Ireland has cultural links to the Commonwealth, many English people are descended from the Irish particularly the Irish labourers who came to Great Britain in the 19th century to dig canals and lay railway tracks, along with an exodus after "An Gorta Mor" (The great hunger). Irish links in British culture go back much further. The Scottish and Irish speak pretty much the same language and most parts of the Northeast of England have a high number of people of Irish descent and parts of Scotland too like Glasgow (Names like McBride and McShane are Irish not Scotch). I mean watching the chase, the host is called Bradley Walsh - Walsh is a very Irish name, and an episode of Who do you think you are - with comedian Lee Mack proved he was descended from 19th century Irish migrants.

2. Until 1976 their coins were made in the UK, and not in Ireland - their designs were by an Englishman and currency based on the English system until the Euro.

3. The main language in the Republic or Ireland is English, despite the promotion of Gaillege and the Gaeltacht, only 4% of the Irish population can speak Gaillege fluently and 65% know no more than the basic words like Failte. In most of Ireland its obvious the language everyone speaks is English.

Gaillege is like Te Reo Maori - the government pays Politically correct lip service to it - but in reality it has almost no use outside Ireland and Scotland.

4. All Irish stamps are listed by Stanley Gibbons in their British Commonwealth catalogues (There was a period between 1940 and about 1960 they were not after 1937 - but in the 60s they were bought back in the fold).

So to me - Yes especially as many people descended from the Irish global disapora will often have some British ancestry in their make up too (English, Scottish, Welsh, Manx, Cornish or Channel Islands).
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
