Coin roll finds

I used to do a lot of coin roll hunting in the 2000s, mostly halves.  Then my banks started charging me both to order boxes and to return rolls.  One bank had a free coin counter in the lobby, and would let me keep anything stuck to the magnet, but they removed the machine in 2012.  My rate of good finds didn't justify the increasing  fees, so I quit.

If your bank is letting you hunt rolls for free, enjoy it while it lasts.

Both of my banks used to have coin counting machines, but removed them within a year or two of each other a few years back. They will both now only accept rolled change. One of them only gives boxes to business customers, which I am not, so I use them as my dump bank and to get free wrappers. There are 3 branches within a 5 mile radius. I go to a different branch every week to dump coins so as not to annoy the tellers too much, and I've been doing this long enough – I'm sure they recognize me when I come in. The other bank has no problem ordering boxes for me and the tellers know I want circulated coins and have them ready for me to pickup the day they get them.

There are a few other banks/credit unions in the area that still have coin counting machines, but I don't like their fees and minimum balance requirements and I don't really want to deal with managing more accounts than I have to.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 2000-S South Carolina proof – Found one of these just 2 weeks ago. Though, this one is in a bit better condition and still has some cameo left on it.
    • misc: colorized 2004 Florida quarter (3rd party overprint)

Alas, no W quarters this time.

  • Nickels (bank rolls)
    • WWII 35% silver (2): 44-D, 44-P
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (22): 38-S, 2x 40, 40-S, 41, 46-S, 2x 48, 48-D, 49-D, 52, 53, 54-D, 54-S, 2x 57-D, 3x 58-D, 3x 59-D
    • 1999-S Proof - unfortunately, damaged by a rolling machine (ring of death)
    • Canadian (3): 86, 87, 89

Much better luck with nickels, some silver and another key date (38-S). Now only missing 50-D.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 2012-S El Yunque - circulation quality NIFC
    • 2020-W Weir Farm

Only missing one more W design now, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller.

  • Pennies (bank rolls)
    • Wheat cents (20): 27 (F), 34 (XF - upgrade), 37 (VF), 3x 44, 44-D, 44-S, 45-S, 50-D, 51-D, 53-D, 54-D, 55, 2x 56-D (1 UNC RB), 3x 57-D (1 with a die chip; top half of the 5 is filled in), 58-D
    • A really nice UNC 1965, full red
    • Canadian (4): 69, 72, 79, 93

Pretty good penny box. Double the average of what I usually find for wheats. Of course, mostly 40s and 50s, but a few oldies, too.

Found a pretty worn but still good Buffalo nickel in a roll  a few days ago

it’s 1934-d even though the flip says otherwise

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • a very nice 1966,
    • 2002-S Proof Louisiana - a bit dirty, but still has some cameo

  • Nickels (48 bank rolls + 2 customer-wrapped rolls; tellers told me the Brinks guy delivering boxes this week had a bunch of them stacked up on a dolly and the stack fell over, some boxes tore open and had to re-filled and taped up)
    • WWII 35% silver: 42-P
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (29): 40, 40-D, 40-S, 2x 41, 42, 46, 47, 3x 49, 53, 53-S, 3x 54-D, 55-D, 4x 56-D, 2x 57, 2x 57-D, 58-D, 3x 59-D -- all common high-mintage years, nothing interesting this time
    • a very nice BU 1962, upgrade

2019W San Antonio Missions - XF.

Those W mint marks are really difficult to find specially here in Europe. Good finding!

Cents are money too!

Those W mint marks are really difficult to find specially here in Europe. Good finding!

They're not any easier in America.  I've looked closely at every coin that's ever passed through my hands, and I've never seen a W mintmark in circulation.

Admittedly yes, very difficult to find and it takes quite a volume of roll searching and luck. Every week when I'm at the bank I will ask for a few rolls of mostly quarters and sometimes other denominations. I also buy lots of folks personal change containers and search through thousands of coin at times. They are glad to get rid of them and cash in and I still have fun searching through them. It can be laborious but sometimes you can find rewarding little treasures such  silver, S  and  W's here and there. If I remember correctly,  I found 5 or 6 W mint mark coins in circulation., mostly when they first came out. The majority of the population were simply not, nor still look for them. This one came out of a roll from the bank and clearly circulated:

  • Halves (bank rolls)
    • 2009-S Proof in pretty good condition - no contact marks, cameo just beginning to turn a little hazy
    • NIFCs (9): 2x 03-D, 13-D, 2х 14-P, 15-D, 16-P, 17-D, 19-P, 20-D

14-P is an addition to my album. Still missing 11-D, 12-P, 15-P and 82-P no FG.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 2012-S Hawaii Volcanoes (NIFC)

Things have slowed down quite a bit on the quarters front, but still finding something new.

    • WWII 35% silver (2): 42-S, 43-P
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (32): 2x 39, 4x 40, 40-D, 41-S, 47, 49-D, 52, 2x 52-D, 53-D, 54-D, 4x 55-D, 57, 8x 58-D, 4x 59-D – all common years
    • Canada (2): 82, 86

No luck with quarters this week.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 2017-S George Rogers Clark (NIFC)
    • 2020-W Tallgrass Prairie
    • 2020-W Weir Farm

Nothing I haven't found before, but still a good box.

  • Pennies (bank rolls)
    • Wheat cents (12): 10, 42-S, 2x 44, 45, 45-D, 46-S, 47-D, 48-D, 51-D, 52-D, 53-D
    • Canadian (5): 42, 55 with strap, 60, 65, 80, 87 - surprisingly many earlier years

When I first opened this box, it did not look very promising. There were barely any copper enders on the top, so I thought I might have gotten someone else's rejects. Didn't find any wheat cents in the first 10 rolls. Eventually, things warmed up a bit and I got some finds, including an older Canadian cent with George VI on it and a 1910 wheat cent upgrade toward the end. But, yeah, it was mostly zinc.

Nice find, but are you sure it's silver?

Yes, because it is the weight of the silver one and not the cupronickel one.

As an USA coins collector those W mints do make me jealous.

Cents are money too!

Not from a roll. But put a 20 in the change machine so i could wash my work cloths. I been working on getting my old laptop back up so i can take images. This makes the 3 or 4 one i gotten at the laundry mat.

Not to bad for running windows 8. Iam still looking for American Samoa. Did not come out to bad.

It is, what it is, or is it.
  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 2019-W San Antonio Missions -- another step closer to making a roll of them :)
    • 2020-W Salt River Bay

Both a bit circulated but, hey, it's 2024. Can't complain about finding 2 Ws in one box.

  • Nickels (bank rolls)
    • WWII 35% silver: 2x 45-P – in the same roll, just 1 nickel apart
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (18): 38-S (key date), 3x 40, 40-D, 2x 40-S, 41, 46, 49, 53, 54-D, 55-D, 56, 57-D, 3x 59-D
    • 2023-D struck through grease
    • Canadian: 2000

Second 1938-S this year, but just as worn as the first.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • Only 1 find in the whole box: a 2015-P Homestead with multiple die chips // “snow on the roof”

  • Pennies (bank rolls)
    • Wheat Cents (9): 3x 44-D, 2x 44-S, 48-D, 3x 58-D
    • BU 1970-S (large date) – upgrade
    • Canadian (5): 50 (George VI), 76, 82, 98, 10 (non-magnetic)

One of the 1958-Ds was very oxidized on one size and bright red on the other, with traces of glue. It probably spent decades in a cardboard album, with only one side exposed to air.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 1990-S Proof – I'd say XF. There is some cameo remaining around legends on the obverse and a bit more on the reverse, but the field around Washington's portrait is pretty beat up.

  • Nickels (bank rolls)
    • WWII 35% silver: 44-D
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (27): 38-S (key date), 39, 40, 41, 46, 46-D, 2x 47, 47-S, 3x 48, 49-D, 50 (semi-key date), 3x 53-D, 53-S, 54, 54-S, 55-D, 56, 56-D, 3x 58-D, 59-D
    • 2009-P – lowest mintage of the recent years; too worn to be worth keeping, though
    • 2010-S Proof
    • Canadian: 1992 (1867-1992, 125th Anniversary of Confederation circulating commemorative)

The last couple of quarter hunts have been pretty tough, but nickels are still producing a good number and a variety of finds. This is my 3rd 1938-S since early May.

 Some ones from today

Found in a dime roll

 also in a dime roll

And as always, a wheat penny.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 90% silver: 1964-D – first silver quarter since February
    • 2009-S Guam Proof – One of the best-preserved proofs I've found in circulation. Nice DCAM with minimal contact marks
    • misc: gold-plated 2002-D Mississippi and 2002-D Indiana – they weren't in the same roll, but likely came from the same set

  • Nickels (10 bank rolls + 40 customer-rolled, a bunch of different wrapper types)
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (20): 39, 40-D, 41, 41-S, 46, 2x 46-D, 47-D, 48, 52-D, 53, 2x 53-D, 54-D, 2x 56-D, 57-D, 58, 58-D, 59-D – nothing interesting

looking through 4×25 2€ coin rolls from my german bank i found nice circulating from small countries: Slovenia 2007, Monaco 2020.

found a dime in a roll of quarters (it was stuck to another quarter)

  • Nickels (bank rolls)
    • Buffalo: 37-S – solid VF, with clear date and mintmark; relatively low mintage year, only 5,635,000 issued
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (21): 2x 39, 40, 41, 46, 46-D, 48, 2x 50 (semi-key date), 53, 54, 2x 54-D, 2x 57, 3x 57-D, 58-D, 2x 59-D
    • Canada (2): 82, 98
    • Bermuda: 5 Cents 1993
    • Honduras: 5 Centavos 1980

  • Pennies (customer-wrapped rolls)
    • Wheat cents (6): 37, 3x 44-D, 51, 51-S
    • Canada (3): 58, 79, 94
    • Germany 2 Euro cent 2009-D
    • Greece 2 Euro cent 2015

Not a lot of wheat cents this time, but more variety of foreign finds than usual. First time finding something from Greece and Honduras.

Euro Cents - 10c, 20c, 50c:  Anyone else found that there are a lot of forgeries around at the moment?

  • Quarters (bank rolls)

  • Nickels (bank rolls)
    • Buffalo: ND (P) – Pretty good details on both sides, but the date is completely unreadable
    • WWII 35% silver (2): 44-D, 44-P
    • Pre-1960 Jefferson (16): 39, 40-D, 41, 42, 47-S, 2x 52, 2x 54-D, 57, 57-D, 2x 58-D, 59, 3x 59-D

Pretty average, as far as the number of wheat cents goes. 1946-D is a pretty nice AU red-brown. Even has some luster on the reverse. 1949-S has the lowest mintage for post-WWII circulation quality cents,  64.3 million issued.

@Houseofham how do you get boxes of coin rolls at a bank and not just individual rolls?

Just ask a teller if they can order boxes for you or have boxes in their vault that you can buy. Sometimes they'll say no or that they need them for their business clients, then you try another bank.

Hello fellow USA collectors. Can someone explain why a bank would sell a roll only to its customers??? A couple of days ago my son tried to get me one and was refused. So basically, a tourist is being denied this service.

Banks usually only keep a minimal amount of coins/bills in the vault to cover their normal volume of operations for a week. Anything extra has to be ordered, which costs them money. So, they only serve those they make money on.

Then, different banks have different arrangements and policies. Some have a monthly/yearly delivery contract with an armored car service like Loomis where they can order as many boxes/bills as they need, up to a certain amount, or they might be paying for individual deliveries. Some banks further limit it to certain account types, or require a minimum balance, or even charge fees per roll.

On top of that, bank tellers hate dealing with boxes of coins, whether you're getting/dumping coins. A box of quarters/halves weighs a little over 25 lbs and all these boxes have to be carried from/to the vault, usually by hand, 1-2 boxes at a time. Plus, it involves extra paperwork for the head teller (more often than not, a grumpy older lady), which they are usually not happy about, either.

But what if you just want a roll or two?

But what if you just want a roll or two?

They have no legal obligation to give you change. So, like I said, it varies according to bank policies. To give you a few examples:

- PNC used to allow non-customers to exchange up to $25. Idk if they still do.

- Huntington will only service account holders, but allows them to order coin boxes free of charge

- Wells Fargo will only provide rolls to business account holders via the Cash Vault program (first 15 rolls per statement period free, then $0.15/roll)

So how do you get rolls? Why does your bank give them to you? Do you ask for rolls people bring in or are these ones that the bank rolls up from loose change? Or from the fed?
I ask for halves every time I go in but haven’t gotten any in years…

what is it about pre 1960 Jefferson’s that is special? Are you just collecting those in rolls or something?

Nothing particularly special, unless you happen to find a key date (38-D, 38-S, 39-D, 39-S, 50-D) or at least a semi-key date (48-S, 49-S, 50, 51-S, 55). Other than that, they are just older coins that one can still find in circulation. The only thing that differentiates them from 1965 and later is that the mintmark is on the other side - to the right of the Monticello, rather than below the year.

ps: I'm making a roll of 1939 with no mm to put back into circulation, just for the fun of it. ;)

I have this happen regularly with foreign coins. Australia has minted coins for a bunch of pacific nations and they use the same size planchettes. For as long as I remember I've found NZ and Fiji coins in circulation here and they are usually accepted in shops. Generally, a human bank teller will not accept these for deposit if they see them; however the coin machines I use cannot differentiate between these and the real coins so I am fortunate they go back in undetected.

Found two whole rolls of 2024D USA pennies, looks like straight from the mint - very shiny.

I know this was a year they minted a lot fewer pennies than normal, for whatever reason, but there are still 1.5 billion of them out there.

I'm not planning on collecting them but are they worth holding onto for trading with other people?

Or are they easy enough to come by that if anyone wants them they can get them?

1.5 billion is still a huge number and they are not rare by any means. On the other hand, 2024 nickels are a lot harder to come by and are definitely worth more than face value, so if you find some, hold on to them.

thanks, that's what I was thinking - back to the bank they go. I'll keep an eye out for 2024 nickels, although I suppose I won't get lucky enough to find a whole roll of those.
