Currently, there are only 2 levels to the catalog: Countries - coins, plus sub-headings under a country that are not searchable and thus are of limited use.

I would like to propose that there should be multiple levels of sub-sections under each country, so you can navigate/drill into sub-sections and narrow down search criteria to produce more relevant results.
  1. The additional subsection levels need to be supported by Advanced Search
  2. At each level, there should be a short description field providing additional information. For example, if it's a country, it would tell where the country is located, when it was formed, whether it's internationally recognized, etc. If it's a monarch change, provide a date range of coinage issued during their rule. If it's a monetary reform, the conversion rate from the old-to-new currency, etc.
  3. Countries that are direct successors of each other should be grouped together under a common collective name

For example:

Theoretically, regular circulation coinage, circulating commemoratives, numismatic products, etc could also be split into sub-sections, but probably not necessary because there are already search filters for that.

Each country's listings could be presented in a number of different ways:
  • Single page with all sections and all coins on it
  • Single page with a collapsible list (could be dynamically loaded when user clicks to view section content)
  • Section headers only, with links to child section pages/coins

I invite everyone to discuss this proposal and welcome constructive criticism.

Hello,
This has been somehow implemented recently with the ruling authorities/periods. Earlier than that, several levels of countries/issuers have been implemented, with the possibility to add an introduction for each of them.
