Done with AI.
Yes with most of them. The AI fails with some that are encapsulated and have light reflections. Also with those where it is not clear what the main subject of the photo is, for example a coin within a coin.
But the main advantage is that it takes about five seconds per coin from the list of N# numbers, which I copy-paste from this thread. A long time ago I proposed that Mr. Robot take charge and close this endless task.

I see this batch now. @Jarcek , because it's been a few days since you ordered them, I've checked them and most of the background look fine. I don't know if someone has fixed them yet, or if they just had unnoticeable backgrounds.
Hello,
nobody fixed them, but you are right, those backgrounds are barely noticeable.
If you want, I'll make the requests, but the referees will say they don't notice any difference.
There are slight lines just state in the reason; removal of minor background to get rid of them in the auto flagging system.

I always use CCIP in the Sources field. Never had a rejection for even very minor cropping. If they do, just appeal it, which usually goes to Jarcek.

There are slight lines just state in the reason; removal of minor background to get rid of them in the auto flagging system.
I’ve encountered people requesting minor lines removal many times before and have a few things to add about this issue:
1) The people who submit those pictures back in the day usually take the reduced-resolution pictures from sites like Stacks and Heritage when they DID NOT zoom in the pictures initially to get the full-resolution pictures.
2) Most of the reduced pictures on those sites have minor line issues. The full-res ones do not have such issue.
3) Instead of spending time photoshopping reduced picture to remove the line, just have someone actually get full-resolution pics with no issues.
I am likely to reject future requests with line removal and get the full-res pics myself. We clearly have permissions from some of the best sources with probably the best picture qualities, yet some can’t get copy-and-paste right to whatever reasons.
Most likely they didn't bother to make a free account (that is needed to get to the full size pictures).

Yes that could be one of the reasons, although you only need your email without payment methods made or anything else to create an account.
My other assumption is that the Numista site was not able to handle photos exceeding certain memory size, thus reduced photos were the only alternative.
Please do not reject the changes, even if they are minuscule. Items flagged with bad background are not being shown on Numista homepage.

I meant to encourage others to replace pictures in full resolution themselves instead of just me trying to find them. Fixing reduced res pics seems redundant if both reduced-res pics and full-res pics can be acquired easily from the exact same source link.
It is now possible to search for badly cropped images using keyword /picture-background/.
Jarcek, if you want I can run a batch to remove the backgrounds of the coins or exonumia, >300 each, found with /picture-background/.
There are some pictures I don't know what to crop. For example,
N#272214 , previously rejected by the referee
N#397590 , the IA thinks the main motif is the circle and the irregular form is the background, I agree 😉
N#113471 , unlimited coins
If you can do that, it would be highly appreciated!
Sure there will be some edge cases always. I would combine Round shape with /picture-background/ for that. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=%2Fpicture-background%2F&ct=exonumia&im1=&im2=&ttat=y&ttcw=y&ttde=y&ttdt=y&ttga=y&ttlo=y&ttte=y&ttpa=y&ttph=y&ttri=y&tttr=y&ttin=y&ttle=y&ttmi=y&ttsc=y&ttwc=y&ttsf=y&ttfe=y&ttfr=y&ttfu=y&ttut=y&ttbu=y&ttco=y&ttlt=y&ttta=y&ttwa=y&ttre=y&ttba=y&ttbr=y&ttca=y&ttcu=y&ttia=y&ttma=y&ttna=y&ttsa=y&ttua=y&ttxa=y&ttam=y&ttcm=y&ttem=y&tthm=y&ttim=y&ttsm=y&ttmm=y&ttpm=y&ttrm=y&ttxm=y&ttym=y&ttad=y&ttct=y&ttme=y&ttar=y&ttts=y&ttel=y&ttcs=y&ttes=y&ttrp=y&ttbl=y&ttbb=y&ttmt=y&ttpt=y&ttcf=y&ttcn=y&ttwe=y&ttaw=y&ttfc=y&ttpe=y&ttcc=y&ttfp=y&ttpl=y&tpat=y&tpcc=y&tpfa=y&tppa=y&tpre=y&tpso=y&tpco=y&tpfx=y&tppo=y&tppr=y&tppc=y&tprc=y&tptv=y&tpmp=y&ttpr=y&ttot=y&tpop=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=6&no=&v=&i=&b=&ie=&u=&a=&dg=&m=&f=round&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=

It is now possible to search for badly cropped images using keyword /picture-background/.
Is there a list of codes you can put in search ? They would help navigating the catalog
Hello,
First of all, thank you for your job with removing background.
I have one request: please do not crop the pictures of non-simmetrical coins when doing it. An often result of this is that coin on an one picture became visually bigger then on a second one.
Please leave sizes of pics as they are. The pictures on one page must have the same dimensions even in case they have plenty of white space
I understand what you mean. We can find examples where this effect is more noticeable:
The guidelines are somewhat ambiguous on this issue:
Pictures of the obverse and reverse should be rotated upright. The coin should be oriented parallel to the photographic plane.
“Pictures rotated upright” may be “the main element of the design rotated upright”. But “coin parallel to plane” may be “the longest dimension parallel to plane”.
And we also have the guideline:
Pictures should be tightly cropped around the coin.
We need to choose between two options, perhaps with the orientation of the administrators:
What do you think, @Jarcek ?
Hello,
found a few more pending items please:
Anyone can help with this: N#450721
Needed correction to have the round shape & than background removal.
Thanks in advance.
You can extrapolate the perspective with the rectangle I didn't take to much care doing that because I don't know if it is worth it because of the out of focus bottom/front of the picture anyway.

Thank you both. I noticed this coin on eBay, not know about it before. I asked and seller agree to use their pictures of this coin, so I used it but only these from the big angle were avaliable.
Anyway, I cropped the version by Idolenz and now results looks maybe not perfect but good enough. Thanks!
I just approved this request but the picture includes the coin holder so it would amazing if someone could remove it!

No problem, you already did on the change request validation comment.
Please, some more to remove background:
Currently the obverse and reverse images of all rigid objects in Numista have their background white or have requests pending (24 pending just now).
There are also three banknotes with small uncut areas on their edges. Can anyone fix them?
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=%2Fpicture-background%2F&st=148-143&cat=y
I'm not sure what can be done to those. Here's an example of one (the black background is not part of the image). Removing the background will also remove the object. They could be converted to .png files with the background transparent but that's not allowed.
Here's another one:
And the third:
Maybe the one side of the first could be trimmed a tiny bit more.
I guess it's a hint that says if the corner pixel is not white, show as items that needs to be cropped… could not be the right hint for the recatangular shapes cropped perfectly without any background around.
Some have the right software to do it with one click
“ This adjustment involved one click of the tool, and took me three seconds, including closing and saving the file with a jpg compression check.”

But we have thousands of banknotes in Numista, and only these three are catched by the hint.
By the way, two of them have a square shape, not the usual rectangular one, and the third one does not have the shape field filled in. I don't know if it has anything to do with it.
Perhaps @Jarcek can tell us what the search /picture-background/ does and why it points to those three banknotes.
It simply checks the color of some top left pixel, if it is white :)

But they're not on the middle one.

But a tightly cropped rectangular banknote should not have a white corner. The logic must be a bit more complex.

If I remember correctly, I meant that the only way to get rid of the white top left pixel is to crop off some of the banknote.
Hello everyone, I have this Liberian "puzzle" coin consisting of 12 $5 coins and a central $40 coin. If I understand correctly, Numista lists each piece separately (in Krause, it's considered a single coin). I don't have the data (weight and dimensions) for each piece separately, but I still think it's possible to enter all of these pieces and add the total data for the set in the comments. Can someone crop each of the pieces?
